CalFresh Outreach

CalFresh, known federally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is a monthly benefit that assists low-income individuals and families in buying healthy foods when money is tight. It’s the nation’s best anti-hunger program, but only 70% of eligible households in California are enrolled because of the perceived stigma of “food stamps,” immigration concerns, an overwhelming application process and other factors. Our CalFresh Outreach team is dedicated to breaking down those barriers and connecting more eligible Sacramentans to this valuable program.

We help individuals and households determine their eligibility to receive CalFresh and assist those who are eligible in completing applications and navigating the system. To get started, complete the contact form, call us at (916) 456-1980 or text “food” to 74544.

What can I buy with CalFresh benefits?

You can purchase food items like fresh produce, dairy products, meat, fish, poultry, bread, cereal and formula. You can also buy seeds and plants that produce food to eat.

What am I not allowed to buy with CalFresh benefits?

You can’t buy any food that will be eaten or heated in the store. You also aren’t able to purchase alcohol or nonfood items such as toiletries, cigarettes, tobacco, vitamins or medicines.

How do I purchase food with CalFresh?

Those who qualify for CalFresh receive an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which looks and works like an ATM card. When you swipe your EBT card at checkout, the cost of the food is automatically subtracted from your CalFresh account. EBT cards are accepted at most grocery stores, convenience stores and farmers’ markets.
