Reaching Students in Sacramento with CalFresh

Known as an essential component in our community’s hunger relief network, Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS) currently provides food and education for 150,000 men, women and children every month. But did you know over 230,000 people currently struggle with food insecurity in our county? That number includes families and individuals, children and seniors. And, increasingly, students.

If you’ve ever spent time with a hungry individual, you know their temper can be shorter, their concentration less robust and their patience nearly non-existent. This combination often affects students the most, interrupting studies and lowering motivation to stay engaged in class.

One of the best ways to provide nutritional assistance, to any Sacramento resident, is through CalFresh, the federal Food Stamps program in California. CalFresh can boost a family’s grocery budget to put healthy food on the table. The program issues monthly electronic benefits to buy food at local markets, large grocery stores and farmers’ markets. It takes less than 5 minutes to see if someone qualifies and just 30 minutes for a confidential appointment to complete an application. Check out qualifications for CalFresh here.

Unfortunately, many stigmas and confusion about the application process still exist surrounding food assistance. Thanks to a generous grant of $81,724 from the Walmart Foundation, SFBFS can now provide information and resources to college students in our community.

On January 30, SFBFS’ CalFresh outreach team, Sac City College’s CalWORKs department and RISE joined forces to launch monthly CalFresh application assistance to college students. Students stopped by throughout the day to learn about CalFresh and qualified individuals completed the application on site!

Students unable to attend a scheduled outreach event can learn about CalFresh by contacting RISE at (916) 650-2782, CalWorks at (916) 558-2331 or SFBFS at (916) 456-1980 to schedule an appointment, or by completing a brief inquiry form.

Thank you to the Walmart Foundation for believing everyone should have access to healthy food!
