Rumor has it Metallica, not wanting to grandstand, has been a secret supporter of food banks for decades. In 2017, the rock band went on the record with efforts to end hunger, creating All Within My Hands Foundation. This foundation helps create sustainable communities by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger and other critical local services. As part of their current tour, Metallica donates proceeds from concerts to Feeding America . As a distribution partner, Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS) will receive proceeds from the Sacramento concert. In addition, SFBFS received donated tickets to the Metallica concert at Golden 1 Center on December 7 to honor our dedicated volunteers.
Current volunteers entered SFBFS’ online contest and our Director of Volunteer Services & Community Engagement, Robin Simpson, held a random drawing. Thank you to all the volunteers who serve every day at SFBFS and congrats to our lucky winners.
Meet SFBFS’ volunteers who will be attending Metallica’s concert:
Elisza Elias-Berg enjoys working with at-risk youth. “I like knowing the food I sort will end up on the tables of families. I volunteer at Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services because I'd like to think that maybe some kid out there will get to have a good meal on their plate due to my effort ...” She enjoys sorting food at SFBFS and makes volunteering a family affair, enlisting her children over the years and encourages others to do what they can for their communities. The music reminds Elisza of long-time friends, but she can’t wait to bring her son to make new Metallica memories and share the experience with him.
Leticia Mirelez-Wong enjoys helping others. Her volunteer service to SFBFS feels important, fun and keeps her connected to volunteers, staff and neighbors. Leticia shares that she likes, “improving the lives of others” and wishes more people would volunteer in their communities. “A lot of our social service and safety net organizations run on volunteers.” Her favorite Metallica songs are “Unforgiven II” and “Nothing Else Matters.” Leticia’s love for the band goes back to teenage years and reminds her of best friends.
Thank you Elisza and Leticia for your volunteerism! Thank you Metallica for your hunger relief efforts! Thank you Feeding America for supporting SFBFS!
